The committee for 2012-13 has been elected.
A huge thank you is due to last year’s committee, Gwen, Pollie, Phil and Susanna for all their hard work. Club trips don’t just happen, they need people to book huts and caves, sort out the gear, drive the minibus (thanks to David W and Stuart H for doing this), and otherwise run the club.
Here’s the list of the new committee:
President
Next year’s President is Minttu Virolainen.
“Hello to all Guppies! My name is Minttu Virolainen and I’m from Finland. I escaped the long and cold winters of ours to Glasgow to study Biochemistry. Now, who would do that unless they could procrastinate by exploring the many caves of UK? This is me just out of a cave in Derbyshire, and the only reason I don’t have mud all over my face like normal, is that the entrance is a waterfall – my second favourite thing about caves right after climbing! I wish you all a great year of caving!
Hyvää kymmenettä syntymäpäivää, GUPA!
(That’s me wishing GUPA happy 10th birthday in Finnish!)”

Secretary
.
The new secretary is David Glen.
Hey – My name’s David Glen, and this is me squashed into a cave in Yorkshire. I’m from Glasgow (the place to be!) and I study chemistry and physics. Take it from a Glaswegian – caving is the best!
Email : secretary-potholing@(delete-this-bit)gusa.gla.ac.uk
.
Treasurer
Calum Rother is to be the treasurer for next year.
.
“Hi, I’m Calum Rother, I study Aerospace Systems Engineering and I’m from Edinburgh, the best side of Scotland (David). GUPA is the place where all of the best people come together to share their strange obsession for going underground. Some people say that caving is a scary, it’s nothing compared to some of the things I’ve been through…(see the picture)”

.
Tacklemaster

Next year the tacklemaster will be Simeon Skopalik, helped by Gwenllian Tawy (last year’s president).
”Hello, my name is Simeon Skopalik and I am GUPA’s Bulgarian-lad-kit-bitch-member-associate for 2012-13. I study Mechanical Engineering with Aeronautics, which is something one can hardly know from the otherwise exclusive picture of me acting as a caving Christmas tree. The only other thing worth saying is ” Naslajdavaite se na peshternoto delo” * which in translation from Bulgarian means enjoy your caving activities.”
*sorry, I can’t work out how to use the plugin that allows WordPress to support Cyrillic script. Editor.
.
.
Gwen is seen on the right, concealing herself among the kit
She says “Os nad ydych erioed wedi bod o tan ddaear, nid ydych wedi byw eto! Ymunwch a GUPA!” which means “If you’ve never been underground, you’ve not lived yet! Join GUPA!”
Social Secretary
Alfred Bengtsson is going to arrange our collective social life in 2012-13. Judging by Alfred’s performance at CHECC 2011 you should fasten your seatbelts now.
“Hey everyone! My name is Alfred
Bengtsson and I’m from Sweden. I left the cold and rain to come to Glasgow to study Politics, in the cold and rain. So far I have managed to come out of every cave soaking wet which has become sort of a tradition for me. This is just one of the many things that has happened to me during my time in GUPA. Trust me, you’ll never be bored when you’re out caving.
Grottutforskning är ett äventyr du ska passa på att prova. Grattis GUPA! Tio år gammal!
(Which is Swedish for “Caving is an adventure you should try. Congratulations GUPA! Ten years old!)”
Webmaster (not on the committee)
If on a club trip you spot a grumpy middle-aged bloke who is going decidedly thin on top, that’s probably Hugh Penney, seen here in typical pose. Fantastic as it may sound, Hugh was actually a student at Glasgow until about four years ago (thus being one of the oldest people in the country to have a Young Person’s Railcard).
He’s one of the founding members of GUPA so if you have an awful trip one day please write to: captain-potholing@(delete-this-bit)gusa.gla.ac.uk to complain (to Minttu). Hugh hasn’t always been middle-aged and grumpy. Once he was young and grumpy. If you ply Hugh with enough beer he will regale/bore you with tales of foreign expeditions. Don’t get a lift in his car unless you like Radio 4.

He is helped on the technical side* by Stuart Meldrum (seen on left). He too was a student at Glasgow until a couple of years ago and is still involved with GUPA, although he isn’t often in the pub on a Thursday night (not our pub anyway) as he lives in the Scottish Borders.

* OK, Stuart does all the technical stuff and if the website disappears one day it will be because of something Hugh did. Stuart picks up the pieces.
