So, you’re a fresher on the lookout for a club – you want to go somewhere that’s even darker and dirtier than Qudos – or maybe you’re a second, third or fourth year student who’s been wondering about coming along? We welcome anyone who is keen to go caving.
.
GUPA is the university club to join if you are interested in going into places that most people don’t even know exist. We go on loads of trips around Britain each year and have members with a wide range of experience; we welcome everybody from the interested novice to the experienced caver who wants to go on some good trips. Have a look around the site to find out everything you might need to know, or come along to Uisge Beatha on Woodlands Road on a Thursday after 9pm to find out more. If you can’t find us ask the bar staff where the cavers are.
You’ll find GUPA is really friendly ; we’re a small club so every new ..member will soon feel part of a team. The first trip of the year is ..designated a freshers’ trip but most trips are suitable for everyone and we’ll take your experience/lack of experience into account so just come and chat to us if you’re unsure about signing up for a trip.
More than anything GUPA is not a cliquey club: everyone’s made extremely welcome.
What’s caving like?
Well, it’s impossible to describe the full experience on a mere website – you’ll just have to come along to find out… Most people assume caves will be tight and crawly – and here‘s one that is. But it’s not all about crawling.* They can also be big, wet, dry, beautiful, horizontal, vertical, warm, cold, and everything in between.
One thing about caving is that it’s possible to explore places no human has ever been before – often this will be on foreign expeditions but there’s plenty of exploration to be done right here in the UK too. Ask Mike about his top-secret dig…
What’s the difference between caving and potholing? None. Potholing sort of implies vertical caving and is a word used more in Northern England where there are lots of vertical caves (potholes) but the terms are interchangeable.
Does GUPA go cave diving? No, we promised GUSA (and our mums) that we wouldn’t.
And it’s not (often) like in ‘The Descent’.
Details of how to get in touch with us are here
* it’s not about crawling at all if Hugh has anything to do with it
