- Ah, that sticky subject of cash. Luckily for you we are a student club, whose members are without exception skint. This means that we run the club to be as cheaply as possible for our members. We provide all the kit you might need with a few exceptions that most people own anyway; our trips costs cover almost everything – all you really need to buy is any drink and some extra food that you might want.
Here’s a summary of what you need to pay:
- SRS membership £40. This is the biggest one but if you are planning to join any uni sports club then you need to join the SRS (GUSA’s rule). It also gets you access to all of the sports facilities that the uni has to offer e.g. the gym and swimming pool.
- Club Membership £20 with a reduced rate membership of £5 for your first trip. All clubs must charge a minimum of £20; this is a GUSA (Glasgow Uni Sports Association) rule. If you want to become a full club member then our fee is £20 for the year; however we’ve wangled a deal with GUSA so that people can try caving without forking out too much on the first trip. If you like it and want to come back then you pay the remaining £15. If you decide you don’t want to come back then you’ve only spent £5 instead of £20 on membership.
- Trip costs £25 – £30, depending on the distance. Dales trips are £25, Peak District and Assynt trips are £30. Trips to other areas will be costed individually, but will always be as cheap as possible. If very few people go on a particular trip the cost may rise but we’ll tell you in advance.
The trip cost includes:
- all your transport costs
- all kit except wellies*
- accommodation in a club hut
- Saturday eve
ning meal and Sunday breakfast (for Dales trips we usually get chips on the way down on Friday night and breakfast at Bernie’s cafe on Saturday and you may want something to eat before heading home; you need to pay for these but it’ll be cheap)
So the whole weekend should cost less than a night at the Hive, and with less chance of catching hives! Or hepatitis.
*wellies are cheap to hire or buy at Bernie’s, and we have a few spare pairs knocking about too. You can borrow them but you’ll probably get trench-foot.
That’s it, the only other money involved is for things like our summer expeditions and club t shirts if you want to look fashionable.
